At the end of last week, Geni Corbett (one of Tearfund’s Emerging Influencers) reached an astonishing 1,000 photos for The 139 Project.
Having seen some of the statistics about women living in poverty, Geni was inspired to mobilise people to act. She launched an initiative asking people to write a short message of solidarity with women all over the world, take a photo with it and upload it to Facebook. These photos act as a petition signature for her to print, knit together and present to her local MP and ministers who will be able to take action asking the UK government to uphold the Millennium Development Goals, particularly around gender.
- 70% of those in the worst poverty are women.
- More than half a million people die in childbirth and pregnancy each year.
- Gender-based violence causes more death and disability in women aged 15-44 than malaria, cancer, traffic accidents or war.
1,000 photos of 1,250 people and it just keeps growing! Please show your support and join in the big picture.
