The World is at a Tipping Point

Does what we do in the world today have boundaries? Is the sky the limit, or do we need to rethink how we live so that our impact on the planet is a good one? We are the generation who can and must make a difference.

Thanks to the University of Minnesota Institute on the Environment for this great little animation.

Real problems definitely. But as an environmental scientist I have to say I don’t think we’ve passed any magic ‘tipping points’ that are points of no return (except extinctions that have already happened I guess!). That would imply that it’s too late and there’s nothing we can do, which is far from the case. Acting on climate change and environmental degredation will always be worth it as it will always act to slow the rate of change, reduce the eventual impacts and make the world better in many ways (efficiency, social justice, economic benefits, better biodiversity, better health, better technology…). Don’t give up :)
